STUDIO FIRING CRITERIA

A helpful guide to manage expectations of products and timing. Explained at the beginning and end of every Intro class and Glaze week of every Term class, we hope to inform all students of the processes of ceramic production.

Your Ceramic Pieces

All ceramic pieces require at least 4 weeks (minimum) to be completed from the date that they are thrown. This is due to 2 important factors:

  1. All individual piece made in RTC studio Intro classes are:

Dried (4-5 Days)Trimmed (2 days)Dried (2days)

Bisque Fired (2 days)

Glazed (2 days)

Glazed Fired & Quality Controlled (2 Days)As these processes are laborious and take time, we ask for your patience

2. All pieces produced in class join a que in order of the class date. I.e. pieces from previous Intro classes will be processes first etc.

Firing Expectations/Results

  1. Each class will aim to produce roughly 2-3 pieces. This number is designed to help guarantee you a result to take home. As commonly new students may inadvertently trap air or other debris into their pieces whilst throwing. This may result in them cracking or exploding during firing. This is an accepted and undeniable fact of the ceramic production process, largely due dependent on the skill of the potter/ student attempting to create the piece. This is why we aim to create multiple pieces.

  2. All pieces are individually trimmed and glazed by RTC. This is undertaken to the best standard by which the student’s piece has been made. RTC is not liable for any inherent faults, cracks, irregularities or defects which cause pieces to break or destroy entire pieces during the ceramic process.

  3. Your final chosen glaze will be noted and we will aim to apply them, subject to retail availability. Should any chosen colours not be in stock, a reasonable substitute will be used at the discretion of RTC.

Collections:

We ask that all introductory class attendees contact the studio at x4 weeks from the date of your class in order to assertain the status of your pieces and to arrange pickup

N.B. Please ensure that all pieces are collected within x3 months of the class date. This is due to the volume of pieces that remain uncollected and whilst we make every effort to retain work, uncollected works may be disposed of thereafter.

To ensure your expectations of a fun and engaging lesson, we ask that all students manage their expectations based on these criteria :) Thanks and we look forward to providing you a great experience!
