‘Introduction to Ceramics’ is a great insight into the world of ceramics and wheel throwing. In this introductory class you’ll have the opportunity to get a feel for clay and an appreciation for the wheel throwing we offer in our term classes.

Conducted over a 2 hour workshop, you'll cover the fundamentals of wheel throwing, including centering a ball of clay and forming a cylinder to create a vessel (cup, bowl or vase). Students will choose one work to be fired and will be ready for pick up 4x weeks after our class workshop.

Sunday classes are available: 1pm-3pm

Fee: $95pp

Week 1 and 2

We introduce ourselves to the world of clay and ceramics! Learning about the materials and equipment we’ll be using, including pottery wheel demonstrations and having a spin on the wheels ourselves.

We continue to cover the fundamentals of wheel throwing including how to center the clay, draw up clay walls and creating cylindrical shapes we’ll be able to trim into functional pieces.

Week 3

Continuing to develop our throwing technique, including more advanced methods for making taller and more complex shapes. We also begin trimming our previous weeks work! Achieving beautiful textures and forms.

Week 4

Having achieved a great understanding of throwing basics, we can now attempt larger shapes such as bowls and pots! whilst continuing to trim previous weeks work, honing the design of our pieces.

Week 5

In our second last week, we finalise the turning and trimming of our pots, cylinders and bowls. All forms will be Bisque fired, ready for glazing and
decorative techniques.

Week 6
Our last week will involve all things glazing and decorating; from dipping, pouring, slip trailing and painting. The pieces you have made will have their final touches applied before final firing!

End of term Folio
Our aim to encourage our students to build a portfolio of pieces, made up of different shapes and styles. This is a great way to appreciate all that ceramics has to offer!
Due to the varying processes of trimming drying and firing, course work will take up to
X4 weeks to be fired.
Students are encouraged to contact RTC to arrange pick-up.
